Severe storms claim 19 lives in South US

A severe storm that brought destructive tornadoes with it claimed the lives of at least 19 people over the weekend as it moved south from Georgia and Mississippi into the Florida Panhandle.

There had been reports of 50 tornadoes across the South since Thursday as four separate waves of severe weather wrought havoc, said Frank Giannasca, a senior meteorologist at The Weather Channel. Giannasca added that there would not be complete confirmation as to the actual number of tornadoes until the National Weather Service was able to assess damage on scene.

21-year-old woman among two found dead in Gasparillo

A 36-year-old man and 21-year-old woman have been discovered dead in Gasparillo.

Investigators are seeking to determine whether they were victims of a double homicide or a murder-suicide.

The victims have been identified as 36-year-old Keyon Robert and 21-year-old Christine Roxanne.

They were found dead at a house on Parforce Road, Gasparillo.

Police say the woman was found nude with her throat slit.

The man was mostly burnt.

Investigations are continuing.


Zoolander 2, Batman vs Superman top nominations for 2017 Razzies - worst films of the year

Zoolander 2 has earned a whopping nine nominations including Worst Picture, Worst Actor, and Worst Director for Ben Stiller in the 2017 Razzies, "awards" given to the worse films of the year.

It's also been nominated for Worst Supporting Actress for Kristen Wiig and Worst Supporting Actor for both Will Ferrell and Owen Wilson.

Coming in a close second was Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with eight nominations.

Police officer dies from gunshot injuries sustained in robbery five months ago

Five months after being ambushed and shot, a police officer attached to the Inter-Agency Task Force has succumbed to his injuries.

PC Mervyn Williams who was shot in August during an attempted robbery, died on Monday morning.

The constable was attacked by three men during the robbery attempt. 

Officer of the Central Division held one of the suspects.

An autopsy will be conducted on Monday.

Samsung says batteries to blame for Note 7 fires

Samsung has blamed lithium-ion batteries for causing its Galaxy Note 7 mobile phones to overheat and catch fire, a fault that led to the global recall of millions of devices and damaged consumer confidence in the world’s biggest maker of smartphones.

At a press conference on Monday, Samsung officials said exhaustive tests on tens of thousands of devices and batteries had ruled out any problems with the device’s hardware or software.
But, it added, internal and independent investigations had “concluded that batteries were found to be the cause of the Note 7 incidents”.

Two wounded in Chaguanas shooting incident

Two men have been hospitalised after being shot in Chaguanas this morning.

Police say that around 4:30 am Monday, officers of the Chaguanas Police Station were alerted by loud explosions.

They investigated and observed a silver Mitsubishi Lancer parked in an easterly direction along Railway Road, Chaguanas in the vicinity of the Chaguanas Police station.

Police say one man, Davidnand Deosaran of 30 Feeder Road, Charlieville, was seated behind the driver's seat bleeding from his mouth.
