The Courageous Kids Campaign

The COURAGEOUS KIDS Campaign is our way of introducing you to some of the amazing children who are a part of the JBF Family. Children that are fighting every minute of every day battling this dreaded disease. It’s a fight that they and their families should not have to endure alone. We're giving you the opportunity to see life from their perspective as they share personal moments, experiences and dreams. We H.O.P.E that you’ll be inspired by their strength, faith and beauty.

Meet 4 year old Kyon Cooper 

What’s your favourite colour?  Red, I like red. 

What do you like to do most of all? I like to play, I like cars, and a “motorbicle”

What would you like to do when you grow up? To fly a helicopter 

What was it like to be sick? Mummy used to kill me (referring to his mom holding him down for injections )

Can you tell us one of your happiest moments? Mummy makes me happy

What is your favourite toy? Buds like Yeah (Buzz Light Year

One Wish: I just want a toy or a ball (while scanning the office to see what he could play with)


Kyon was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma - cancer of the eye. He had to have his right eye removed and he has since been fitted with a prosthetic eye. Kyon is currently at school. He’s very loving and affectionate and literally never stays still.


Retinoblastoma is a rare form of cancer that rapidly develops from the immature cells of a retina, the light-detecting tissue of the eye. It is the most common primary malignant intraocular cancer in children, and it is almost exclusively found in young children. It is often discovered when a parent or doctor notices that a child’s eye looks unusual.


Signs and Symptoms:

•  A pupil that looks white or black instead of red when light hits it.

• A crossed eye (looking either toward the nose or  toward the ear).

• Poor vision.

• A red, painful eye.

• An enlarged pupil.


 Let’s introduce  6 year old Samuel


What’s your favourite colour?   Blue and purple because I like that colour  

What do you like to do for fun? Well I like to ride my bike and play football and play with my cars. I like to beat things as well (meaning musical instruments) 

What would you like to be when you grow up ?  I want to be a helper and a pet owner. A helper is somebody who does help people. 

What is it like to be sick? Well I vomit and when I feel sick, I feel sad.

Tell us one of your happiest moments. Lighting fireworks because it is so fun 

What’s your favourite food? Macaroni pie. My grandma’s macaroni pie

One wish: I wish I could see a rainbow. Sometimes I dream I’m sliding down the rainbow with daddy and all my family and it have red, blue, purple and orange. I would like to work JBF one day. Right here in this office. I will be in charge of the toys *huge smile*


Samuel is sweet, curious and very inquisitive. He loves to ask questions that simply lead to a whole lot of other questions. Samuel is being treated for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) 


Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) happens when the body makes too many lymphoblasts (a type of white blood cell). It's the most common type of childhood cancer.


Signs and Symptoms:

•  Tiredness, weakness and/or paleness.

•  Fever and/or Night Sweats

•  Easy Bruising or bleeding (tiny red spots may show on the skin)

•  Bone & Joint Pain (joints may be swollen)

•  Weight-loss or Loss of Appetite.

•   Enlarged Lymph Nodes.

    •    Belly Pain (persistent)



Say hello to 7 year old Ashton


What’s your favorite color?   Gold and Silver because of Power Rangers  

What do you like to do?     I like to watch videos on my phone 

What would you like to be when you grow up?   Pilot!

What is it like to be sick?    I hate the sickness!

One of your happiest moments? KFC! *mom interjects* “But you can’t eat that anymore!” 

Favourite Food:  Pizza! And Dhal and rice and duck!

One Wish:  That I can eat one hundred pizzas!


Ashton was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor and the affected kidney was removed. He’s always upbeat, very intelligent and rocks the cutest smile ever!! 


Wilms Tumor is the most common form of kidney cancer in children.


Signs and Symptoms:

•   A lump or mass in the abdomen

•  Abdominal pain

•  Blood in the urine

•  High blood pressure

•  Fever

•  Diarrhea

•  Weight loss

•   Anemia

•   Shortness of breath

    •      Nausea and vomiting
