A 17-year-old boy will spend the night in the custody of homicide officers after a 15-month-old baby girl who was left in his care was sexually assaulted and beaten to death at their Palo Seco home.
Investigators said the tiny body of Racquel George showed signs of abuse when she was brought to the Siparia District Health Facility on Wednesday night.
An autopsy done Thursday at the Forensic Science Centre revealed that Racquel suffered trauma to the head and body.
Police said that her hymen appeared to be broken.
Reports stated that around 8.30 pm, Racquel’s mother, Sharlene George, a Special Reserve police officer attached to Central Division, returned to her Palo Seco home and found the child unresponsive.
The teenager was nowhere to be found.
She immediately took Racquel to the health facility, but she had already died.
Neighbours said that they heard the child crying on Wednesday, but did not think anything was wrong.
It was not until George returned home that they knew of the death.
South Western Division Task Force and Santa Flora police, including Snr Supt Adam, Supt Phillip, Insp Banwarie and Cpl Smith searched the bushes off Beach Road, Palo Seco and found the teen hiding.
He was arrested and investigators were in the process of gathering information before interviewing him.
