31-year-old man charged with police officer's murder

Ricardo Joseph alias Cardo, 31, today appeared before the Arima 1st Magistrate Court charged with the murder of special reserve police officer, 9719 PC Jason Cyrol John.

John, 29, of Williams Trace, Five Rivers, Arouca, was shot and killed while making his way home on May 24th, 2016.

In addition to the charge of murder, Joseph is charged with possession of firearm and ammunition and faces the unrelated charges of rape, buggery, grievous sexual assault and common assault arising from other crimes committed.

The accused has no known employment and resided at No.83 Williams Trace, Five Rivers, Arouca.

Presiding Magistrate Avason Quinlan, on the murder, firearm and ammunition charges postponed the matter to August 30th and on the sex-related and common assault charges, the matter was transferred to the Sangre Grande Magistrate Court and postponed to August 10th, 2016.

On August 2nd, 2016, Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard, gave instructions to the police to charge Joseph with the various offences.

The charges were laid by Insp Windel Flaviney of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region II.
