A Trinidad and Tobago man working as a security guard in the British Virgin Islands has been charged with allegedly raping his friend’s stepdaughter.

The 54-year-old man, Andre Stedman, appeared in the BVI Magistrate’s Court today.

It's alleged that the incident occurred during a visit to his friend's home.

The court heard that the two men first watched television while the friend's step-daughter stayed in her room.

The step-father later went to bed leaving Stedman asleep on the couch.

The State's case is that the young woman awoke during the night to find Stedman on top of her attempting to penetrate her.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force was called and the Trinidad and Tobago national was arrested and charged.

Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards granted Stedman bail in amounting to US$80,000 bail (TT$540,137).

The magistrate ordered the man to make a US$15,000 ($101,275) cash deposit.

Stedman was also ordered to surrender his travel documents and to report to the Road Town Police Station three days per week between 6am and 6pm.

The matter will be heard again on October 2nd, 2017.
