A 56-year-old man has drowned at Maracas Beach and two other people who were also caught in the current were rescued by the Coast Guard and lifeguards.
He has been identified as Primchan Ramlal.
A statement by the Coast Guard says that on Sunday 2nd July 2017 at approximately 7:10 pm, the Coast Guard received a report from a coast guard officer, Able Seaman Henry, who was on Maracas beach at the time, that there were three persons in some difficulty in the water.
Two were males and one was female.
The report says that AB Henry bravely rescued one of the persons (male) getting him to shore.
Lifeguards at the beach were able to rescue the female and brought her to the shore.
The two persons rescued were subsequently taken to Port-of-Spain General Hospital.
The third person Primchan Ramlal, 56, was unable to be rescued.
At approximately 10 pm Ramlal's body washed ashore.
