Arson suspected in Couva fire

Arson is suspected in a fire which destroyed a Couva restaurant and bar yesterday morning.

Ten people employed at the Bat and Barrel Restaurant and Sports Bar at Rivulet Road are now without jobs. However, no injuries were reported from the blaze.

According to reports, the fire broke out in the early hours of Sunday shortly after a group of men accosted the security guard. A senior employee, who did not want to be named, said he was told three or four men tied up the security officer in the booth.

“They approached the security guard in the booth told him to not look up, stay quiet. They tied him down and the next thing we know is that the place was up in flames and a loud explosion and it must have been quite an explosion,” the employee said.

He said he left his Princes Town home and went to the restauramt after getting a call from the head of security. When he got there at around 2.45 am, the Fire Services had already extinguished the blaze.

Late last year, within the space of five weeks, there were three break-ins at the business place where money and other items were stolen. Reports were made to the police, camera footage handed over and arrests were made.

The estimated cost of losses from the fire was not known up to late yesterday. Couva police are investigating.
