Cunupia man charged with murder

A Cunupia man is expected to appear before a Port of Spain magistrate, charged with the kidnapping and subsequent murder of 19-year-old Leon Bebe, which occurred on Tuesday 10th April, 2018.

Shaquille Matas, also known as ‘Smiley Rogers’, 22, of Eccles Trace, Warrenville, Cunupia, was also charged with robbery with violence, possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition, following advice received from Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard, SC, on Tuesday.

Bebe, a farmer, of Poonah Road, Williamsville, along with a friend, made plans to purchase a Bull Finch bird from a man known to them, at Prizgar Road, San Juan, on Tuesday 10th April, 2018.

However, the transaction went awry when the victim’s friend was bundled into the trunk of a vehicle.

The victim followed the vehicle in his car to 7th Avenue, Malick, Barataria, where he was shot at by the assailants.

He later died at hospital.

Investigations were supervised by Insp. Shaun Craig, Insp. (Ag.) Christopher Fuentes and Sgt. Belinda Sylvester, of Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region 2.

While Matas was charged by PC Danny Moonsammy, also of HBI Region 2, on Tuesday 24th April, 2018.
