The following statement has been issued by the Defence Force.
"With the persistent rainfall over the past 24 hours, North Coast Trinidad, particularly, the Toco region has been adversely affected. Numerous landslides along the main road to Matelot have resulted in impassable roads and communities being cut-off.
The Trinidad and Tobago Regiment’s 1st Engineering Batallion are currently engaged and rendering assistance with the ODPM, Sangre Grande Regional Corporation and Ministry of Works to clear all landslides and restore road mobility.
The Trinidad and Tobago Air Guard have been conducting aerial surveys and mapping all affected areas of impassability and fallen bridges providing critical feedback to the 1st Engineering Bn. The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard is currently on stand by to render any further assistance if needed. The Coast Guard is advising all fisher-folk in that region should weather patterns persist that all small craft be brought in and secured onshore in order to prevent destruction of their vessels. Larger vessels as advised to seek safe shelter in a large and more enclosed bay area.
The Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force will continue to do its part and render all assistance necessary to the recovery efforts of the Toco Region."
