Diabetes Association embarks on series of events for World Diabetes Day

On Wednesday 14 November, 2018, the World and Trinidad and Tobago will recognize World Diabetes Day.

The theme announced by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) for 2018 and 2019 is “The  Family and Diabetes”.

The Diabetes Association of Trinidad and Tobago (DATT) is a Member Association of IDF with 168 similar associations internationally.

IDF is the leading organization that represents people living with diabetes.

Diabetes has a tremendous impact on the family and support network of those affected with this condition.

Currently, over 425 million adults between the ages of 20‐79 are living with diabetes and it is projected by 2045 this will rise to 629 million.

Globally, 1 in 2 persons are undiagnosed and more than  1,106, 500 children are living with Type 1 diabetes.

In Trinidad and Tobago, there is a cadre of persons with pre‐diabetes and approximately 175 000 persons are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

In its effort to educate, motivate and advocate the nation on diabetes, the Diabetes Association has embarked on several programmes.

These include programmes in schools, use of the media and education through our 18 support groups throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
