Education Ministry to begin screening students for special needs

Chief Education Officer Harrilal Seecharan says the Education Ministry intends to screen all students in the system for any special needs requirements they may have.

Seecharan made the disclosure before a parliamentary joint select committee on human rights, equality and diversity Friday morning.

He told the committee that the plan is to ensure that screening takes place from the point of the early childhood education centres and in primary schools.

In addition, he says the ministry will be revisiting funding arrangements for supporting children with special needs – whether in private schools or the public system.

Seecharan also told the JSC of the ministry’s plans to address the issue of special needs, outlined in its strategic plan 2019 to 2023.
