The Ministry of Education is condeming the shooting death of two students of the Success Laventille Secondary School.
The Ministry issued this statement in light of the shootings:
"The Ministry of Education is strongly condemning the shooting to death of two uniformed students of the Success Laventille Secondary School shortly after 3 pm on Thursday January 21st, 2016.
Police have identified the students as Mark Richards of Soogren Trace, Picton Road and Denelson Smith of Mulrain Trace. Both the police and MTS security at the school have confirmed that Richards was a student of the school but did not attend classes this morning.
According to police, both Richards and Smith were passengers in a taxi when gunmen pulled up and opened fire on them. They were killed instantly.
The Honourable Anthony Garcia, Minister of Education who is currently in Jamaica attending a meeting on the Finance and General Purposes Committee of The University of the West Indies said he is horrified by the news, “As soon as the incident happened I was contacted by officials of the Ministry of Education and I am both saddened and angry. I am disturbed by the fact that our students are not safe while using public transport and what is even more disturbing is that they were killed while in school uniform. I will be calling for a full investigation into this matter, as incidents such as this should not be allowed to occur.”
Minister Garcia has assured that Student Support Services has already been contacted and will visit the Success Laventille Secondary School on Friday January 22nd, 2016 to provide grief counseling to both the classmates and staff of Richards and Smith.
Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh is currently acting as the Minister of Education."
