Education Ministry pays maxi taxi concessionaires

The Ministry of Education has paid maxi taxi concessionaires who protested outside the Education Ministry in December.

The Ministry says a cheque has been handed over to the Public Transport Services Corporation to effect the payments.

The following is a statement by the Ministry of Education:

"When maxi taxi concessionaires picketed the Ministry of Education days before Christmas, the Honourable Anthony Garcia, Minister of Education met the group and promised them that every effort was being made to pay them as soon as possible.

Minister Garcia stayed true to that promise and ensured that his Ministry secured the necessary financial releases from the relevant Ministry so that the approximately three hundred (300) concessionaires could receive their payments before school reopens on Monday 8th January, 2018.

On Thursday 4th January, 2018 the Ministry of Education handed over a cheque to the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) to facilitate these payments.

The PTSC is the organisation which contracts these concessionaires who transport children to and from school on a daily basis.

Minister Garcia says the maxi taxi operators provide a critical service and expresses his gratitude for the patience exercised, considering the prevailing stringent economic conditions."
