Education Ministry says recent school video is more than a year old

The Ministry of Education says a recent viral video of abuse at the Bethlehem Girls' RC School is over a year old and has been dealt with.

The Ministry issued the following statement today:

"The Ministry of Education has investigated and found that the video being circulated on Social Media of a fight at the Bethlehem Girls’ RC School is over one year old.

The video, which was first circulated in June of 2016, has resurfaced and has been a cause for concern. School Supervision, through the office of the Chief Education Officer has informed that when the incident occurred last year, intervention was immediately made. The students seen in the video were all post-SEA students who were on the compound for a pan group rehearsal.

Once the incident was reported to the school’s principal and subsequently School Supervision, immediate action was taken. The parents of all the students involved were called in to meet with the principal.

Following this, a mandatory intervention session was organized with the Citizen’s Security Programme where fifteen students participated and were addressed on the topic of indiscipline, followed by a visit to the school by a psychologist and a reformed ex-convict who is now a pastor, to guide the girls on being conscious of the paths they choose.

Further intervention was done through Child Line who visited the school and conducted sessions on self-esteem, bullying and speaking out.

The Ministry of Education affirms its zero tolerance policy on indiscipline and will continue to explore all avenues of intervention to ensure the safety and security of all our students. The five students involved in the incident have all moved on to the secondary level and their performance and discipline are being monitored to prevent any repeat of the behavior displayed in the viral video."
