FFOS heads to Privy Council as Appeal Court dismisses Cumuto highway appeal

The Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal brought by the group Fishermen and Friends of the Sea (FFOS), on the construction of the highway from Cumuto to Sangre Grande.

FFOS appealed for leave for judicial review for the grant of a Certificate of Environmental Clearance (CEC) for the construction of the 5000-metre highway along the southern boundary of The Aripo Savannas.

The group maintains that this is an environmentally sensitive area.

FFOS says it is disappointed by today's ruling but is determined to explore all legal means of recourse.

The group will now seek leave to go before the Privy Council in England to appeal this judgment.

A statement by FFOS says it will persevere until "ecological and environmental justice is served for the voiceless communities of the Aripo Savannas".
