Fire has destroyed the interior of the Ganesh Mandir in Cunupia.
The mandir's executive arm says it hopes to restore the mandir but is now seeking financial support from well-wishers.
The following is a statement from the executive of the Ganesh Mandir.
"On Sunday 25th September at approximately 12:30pm, a fire erupted at the Ganesh Mandir located at the corner of Jonathan and Fernando Lane, Cunupia.
Fire officials responded within 30 minutes and contained the blaze. The interior of the building was however destroyed.
The Executive arm of the Ganesh Mandir wishes to express its deeply felt sadness at the tragedy and extends gratitude to the close-knit Central community for the outpouring of support. They ask that members rest assured that concerted efforts will be made to restore the Mandir to its former glory.
Those wishing to make financial contributions towards the rebuilding and renovation process are kindly asked to do so via cheque or make deposits to the Mandir’s First Citizens Bank (FCB) account #1615104. Alternative fund-raising initiatives will be explored in due course.
The Executive awaits the determination of the fire experts as they investigate the origin and cause of the blaze, after which clean-up efforts will begin.
In this time of tragedy, the overwhelming positivity guides us and reminds us to believe.
The Ganesh Mandir, for decades, has brought Hindus together in faith, prayer and camaraderie.
We look forward to a brighter tomorrow when this can again, be our reality."
