Former Fatima student awarded 2019 Korean Scholarship

For­mer Fa­ti­ma Col­lege and New­town Boys’ RC School stu­dent Joshua Chu For has been award­ed the 2019 Ko­re­an Gov­ern­ment Schol­ar­ship to pur­sue an un­der­grad­u­ate de­gree ma­jor­ing in Elec­tri­cal En­gi­neer­ing at Ko­rea Uni­ver­si­ty in Seoul, Ko­rea.

A state­ment from the em­bassy said Chu For will be­gin his de­gree pro­gramme in March 2019 with one-year ad­di­tion­al study on Ko­re­an Lan­guage in or­der to fa­mil­iarise him­self with new stu­dent life in Ko­rea.

With his keen eyes for en­gi­neer­ing, Chu For has been in­spired to fur­ther study in the field of Elec­tri­cal En­gi­neer­ing and as­pires to be­come a per­son that pro­vide so­lu­tions to dai­ly prob­lems in our life by de­sign­ing cre­ative and use­ful di­vides.

His dream of study­ing in Ko­rea has been en­cour­aged by Mas­ter Jung Jin-young un­der whom Chu For has been prac­tic­ing Teak­won­do, the Ko­re­an mar­tial arts since 11 years old.

He has rep­re­sent­ed T&T at sev­er­al na­tion­al and in­ter­na­tion­al tour­na­ments in­clud­ing 2012 Pan Am Ju­nior Open In­ter­na­tion­al Taek­won­do Cham­pi­onships in Port­land where he won a gold medal.

The Ko­re­an Gov­ern­ment, through its Na­tion­al In­sti­tute for In­ter­na­tion­al Ed­u­ca­tion (NI­IED)’s Glob­al Ko­rea Schol­ar­ship (GKS) pro­gramme, of­fers schol­ar­ships to for­eign stu­dents who wish to fur­ther pur­sue their un­der­grad­u­ate and grad­u­ate de­grees at Ko­re­an ter­tiary ed­u­ca­tion­al in­sti­tu­tions.

Since 2013, sev­er­al bril­liant and mo­ti­vat­ed stu­dents from Trinidad and To­ba­go have been award­ed Ko­re­an Gov­ern­ment schol­ar­ship and are pur­su­ing stud­ies in var­i­ous fields such as in­ter­na­tion­al re­la­tions, bio en­gi­neer­ing, and com­put­er sci­ence.

The Em­bassy said it is pleased to note that the GKS Pro­gramme of­fers a great op­por­tu­ni­ty for the ex­change of young schol­ars be­tween the T&T and the Re­pub­lic of Ko­rea, which will cer­tain­ly con­tribute to fu­ture co­op­er­a­tion and fruit­ful ex­changes be­tween our two coun­tries in the years to come.
