George Bovell 3rd in 50 metres freestyle heat; does not qualify for semi-finals

George Bovell swam 22.30 to place 3rd in the 50 metres freestyle preliminaries in Rio.

However, his time was not enough to get him into the semi-finals tonight.

Only the swimmers with the top 16 times go through.

Bovell swam in lane 7 in Heat 8 at 12.16 Thursday afternoon.

The race was won by Yu Hexin of China in 22.20. 

Filip Wypych of Poland was second in 22.23 seconds.

Bovell had won bronze at the 2004 Olympics the men's 200 Individual Medley.

It was the first-ever Olympic swimming medal for this country and T&T's only medal from the 2004 Olympics.

He was also a finalist in the 50 metres freestyle in the London Olympics where he placed 7th in the fastest field ever assembled.

The semi-finals take place from 9pm Thursday night.
