Gerald Hadeed replaces Vasant Bharath in the Senate

President Anthony Carmona, on the advice of Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has appointed former Tourism Minister Gerald Hadeed as a Senator to fill the void left by the resignation of Senator Vasant Bharath.

Bharath resigned as a senator on November 11th after declaring his intention to run for the post of political leader of the UNC, in the Internal Elections won by Kamla-Persad-Bissessar on Saturday.

Hadeed was sworn in following an announcement by Senate President Christine Kangaloo just before the Senate broke for lunch today.

Hadeed served as the Tourism Minister and also as a senator up until the People's Partnership was voted out of Government in this year's General Election.

Prior to being appointed Tourism Minsiter, he also served as the Minister of Communications.

The Opposition is entitled to six senators who are appointed on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition.
