Grandson charged with murder of man found stuff in barrel

A Freeport man has appeared before a Couva Magistrate, charged with the murder of his grandfather, Irving Mings, whose body was found stuffed in a barrel at his home.

Michael Mings, 26, a musician, of Calcutta Road, #2 Freeport, appeared before Senior Magistrate Siumongal Ramsaran in the Couva Magistrates’ Court today to answer to the charge.

The matter was adjourned to Monday 13th November, 2017.

Mings, 87, a pensioner, also of Calcutta Road, #2 Freeport, was found dead inside a barrel at his home on Friday 6th October, 2017.

He had been reported kidnapped and a $100,000 ransom demand made for his safe return on Wednesday 4th October, 2017.

Homicide detectives believe the victim may have been killed sometime between Wednesday 4th October, 2017 and Friday 6th October, 2017.

Post-mortem results attributed the cause of death to asphyxiation.

Mings was charged by WPC Vanessa Callender-Sinclair, of Homicide Bureau of Investigations, Region 3, on Friday 13th October, 2017 after advice was received from Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard on Thursday 12th October, 2017.
