Heavy police presence for beaches during Carnival

Local Government Minister Kazim Hosein says there will be a heavy police presence in all major beaches during the Carnival season beginning from Terrific Thursday to Ash Wednesday.

The Minister led a team to Maracas Beach on Wednesday where made preparations to roll out their safety plan for citizens during the Carnival weekend.

Chairman of the San Juan/ Laventille Regional Corporation, Anthony Roberts, Inspector Walkins and Sargent Dolabaille of Municipal Police Port of Spain, Inspector Mohammed and Sargent Garcia of the San Juan/Laventille Municipal were present.

Saying not everybody celebrated Carnival, Hosein said many families across T&T spend their Carnival at camps and on coastlines across the country.

"We want to make sure that everybody is safe so we will be deploying our municipal police officers to lend assistance during this time," Hosein said.

He added, "All beach-goers, citizens and tourists alike will feel safe and secure when they relax with their families and friends at major beaches such as Maracas Bay and Las Cuevas Bay as well as popular rivers such as Caura River this holiday weekend as the Municipal Police Constables will be out in full force."

He noted that another batch of municipal police will be graduating in July and will complement the existing cadre of officers stationed at the 14 municipal and regional corporations across the country.

"With these increases in the numbers of constables, we aim to have greater interaction between the Municipal Police and the community," Hosein added.

He noted that the officers will engage in beach cleanups and will also provide protection to those who choose to be away from the bustle of the Carnival period.

He noted that the municipal police will work closely with the T&T Police Service officers.

Roberts commended Hosein on his consistent effort to assist citizens through various programmes and pledged his Corporation’s full support for maintaining the safety of citizens at this time.
