Man in court after threatening police with fake gun

A Claxton Bay man, charged with three counts of common assault and possession of an imitation firearm, has appeared before a San Fernando Magistrate to answer to the charges.

Rocky Mehelan, 27, of Soledad Road, Claxton Bay, was granted $20,000 own bail when he appeared before Magistrate Natalie Diop in the San Fernando 2nd Magistrates’ Court, on Friday 20th July, 2018.

The matter was postponed to Friday 17th August, 2018. While on mobile patrol, officers of the St. Margaret’s Police Station responded to a report of an armed man observed along Hermitage Road, Claxton Bay, around 2:25 am on Friday 20th July, 2018.

Upon seeing the officers, the man ran off and a chase ensued, during which the suspect pointed an object appearing to be a firearm at the officers.

The officers fearful for their lives, fired at the suspect, who was later found to have sustained a bullet wound to the arm.

An imitation firearm was recovered at the scene.

The suspect was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where he was treated.

Mehelan was subsequently charged by Sgt. Gerard McIntosh, of the St. Margaret’s Police Station.
