Man in court for wife's murder

Scores of people gathered outside the Sangre Grande Magistrate’s Court to get a look at the Sangre Grande hunter who shot and killed his schoolteacher wife one year ago as he was finally taken to court on Wednesday.

Dominic Guevara was charged with murder and attempted suicide by Cpl Ramdial of Homicide Bureau Region II, Arouca, following instructions from Director of Public Prosecution Roger Gaspard. He appeared on Wednesday before Justice of the Peace Anna John.

Dressed in a checkered shirt, brown pants and slipper and holding a white towel over his nose, Guevara stood before JP John as she read the charges.

Attorneys Cherrish John and Nigel Browne represented Guevara. Attorney John made an application under section 13 of the Mental Health Act that her client be remanded to St Ann’s Hospital.

JP John advised the attorney to make this application when the magistrate returns to the court Thursday.

As Guevara was escorted out of the courtroom, a weeping relative of the murder victim rushed towards him but was stopped by police.

According to reports, on February 26, 2018, Margaret Diaz-Guevara, 44, a teacher of St Francis RC School in Sangre Grande and mother of five was reportedly dressing for work when she and her husband had an altercation. During the quarrel, her husband grabbed his shotgun and fired upon her. She was hit in the chest and abdomen and died on the spot.

Her husband was found in the bedroom covered in blood after harming himself but survived, although he sustained massive injuries to his face. He was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Complex, Mt Hope, where he had remained warded until his recovery.

Guevara is still under medical care as he has no teeth and no jaw, which makes it difficult to eat any solid food. He survives on liquid food only.
