Maximum penalty for speeding is $6000

Tuesday, May 17, 2016 - 20:00

Police are reminding citizens that the maximum penalty that a court can hand down to someone for speeding, is now $6000.

The penalty was increased from $4000 to $6000 when the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act was amended in 2015.

However, the fixed penalty for exceeding the speed limit remains at $1000.

The reminder came from the coordinator of the Road Safety Project, PC Brent Batson at a new conference today.

It will be at the discretion of a Magistrate to impose the fine up to a maximum of $6000, if the matter is challenged in court or is someone chooses not to pay the ticket.
