A Mayaro man is expected to appear before a Rio Claro Magistrate today, charged with rape and grievous sexual assault against a 24- year-old woman, which occurred on Saturday 12th May, 2018.

Joel Jordan, 38, a derrickman and proprietor of a bar at Base Trace Junction, Rio Claro, was arrested and charged by officers of the Rio Claro Police Station later the same day.

The incident is alleged to have occurred around 4 am on Saturday 12th May, 2018, after the victim got into an altercation with two other women, while at the bar.

Following the fracas, the accused offered the victim a ride to her home in a white Chevy Cruze motor vehicle.

However, he instead took her to Railway Road, Rio Claro, where he allegedly sexually assaulted the woman before dropping her at her residence.

The victim reported the incident to the Rio Claro Police Station via telephone, and the accused, of Union Village, Mayaro, was subsequently arrested by officers around 11:40 am that same day, while driving the same vehicle along Tabaquite Road, Rio Claro.

Investigations were spearheaded by Sgt. (Ag.) Navin Maharaj, while WPC Akela Farriah, both of the Rio Claro Police Station, laid the charges.
