Minister disappointed with low school turnout

The Education Minister is expressing disappointment over the reduced attendance in secondary school students on this Ash Wednesday.

The minister said while teachers' attendance increased, more secondary school students stayed home.

In a statement with collated figures, the minister said reports submitted by school supervisors indicate an increase in teachers’ attendance at both levels.

Attendance at primary school remained the same at 31 percent, however, reports indicate that only 19 percent of secondary school students were in their classrooms as compared to 21 percent last year.

The minister is questioning whether parents are sending the right messages to their children.
