Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, National Security and Communications Stuart Young has confirmed that Foreign Affairs Minister Dennis Moses today attended the inauguration ceremony of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Maduro was sworn in for a second term today.

Young confirmed Moses' attendance at today's post-Cabinet news conference.

He told the media that Trinidad and Tobago is a sovereign country that continues to have good relations with Venezuela.

Venezuela is Trinidad and Tobago's closest neighbour, just seven miles away.

Under Maduro, the economy of Venezuela has collapsed, with inflation reaching 1 million percent.

The country has been criticised by the US for human rights violations.

Millions have been fleeing to neighbouring countries, with 40,000 estimated to be currently living in T&T.
