Chief executive officer of the North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA) Dalvin Thomas has said that Venezuelan nationals can donate blood to the Blood Bank.
He said, however, the blood will be tested.
He made the statement at yesterday’s World Blood Donor Day symposium hosted by the University of the West Indies Faculty of Medical Sciences, in collaboration with North Central Regional Health Authority.
The theme of the celebration was Save Blood For All. The event was held at the Amphitheathre A , Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex Champ Fleur.
Thomas said that Venezuelan nationals and other visitors can give blood if they wish.
He said the NCRHA has also engaged in the walk- the- talk artery where they visit churches ,mosque to get blood donors. He said this saves time, money and inconveniences to blood donors.
Dr Melissa Friday, who also attended yesterday’s event, also thanked the blood donors for their life -saving gift of blood and to make people be aware of the importance of giving blood, so that all in need of blood can have access to the Blood Bank.
She said there is need for blood as 65,000 units are required annually, but presently there is a shortage of 22 units.
