Newallo-Hosein to challenge Kamla Persad-Bissessar for political leader post in UNC election

Opposition Member of Parliament for Cumoto/Manzanilla, Christine Newallo-Hosein has filed nomination papers to run for the position of political leader of the UNC.

It puts her in a three-way race that will involve the incumbent Kamla Persad-Bissessar and former MP and Government Minister, Vasant Bharath.

Newallo-Hosein confirmed that she had filed nomination papers in a brief telephone conversation with CNC3.

Christine Newallo-Hosein was elected to represent the constituents of Cumuto/Manzanilla on Monday September 7, 2015 as a member of the 11th Parliament.

Prior to that she held several responsibilities as Special Advisor to Ministers of State in the ministries of Trade and Industry, Tourism and Housing and the Environment as well as an advisor to the Prime Minister during the 10th Parliament.

Newallo-Hosein has held the portfolio of Minister of the People and Social Development during the 10th Parliament.

She was awarded the Prime Minister’s Award for Innovation and Invention Mentor Award in 2004. 

The UNC elections will be held on Sunday November 26th.
