Nine Venezuelans held for being in the country illegally; handed over to Immigration officials

Nine Venezuelan nationals have arrested for being in the country illegally.

A statement by the Police Service says the Venezuelans were held during an anti-crime exercise over the weekend.

While on mobile patrol along S.S. Erin Road, Santa Flora, officers observed three vehicles driving in convoy, namely a silver Nissan Wingroad, a white Mitsubishi Lancer and a gold Toyota Hilux.

The officers observed five men and four women appearing to be Venezuelan nationals, whom they suspected of being in the country illegally.

The suspects were conveyed to the Santa Flora Police Station and a search was conducted, resulting in officers seizing one Smith and Wesson revolver loaded with seven rounds of .38 Special ammunition from an Arima man who was accompanying them.

The man has been identified as Jairam Beeram, 35, of Block 3, Wallerfield, Arima.

He appeared before Magistrate Margaret Alert in the Siparia 1st Magistrates’ Court on Monday 23rd April, 2018, where he was sentenced to serve 18 months and 12 months concurrently, for possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition respectively.

The Venezuelans were handed over to Immigration officials.

PC Declan Durity of the Santa Flora Police Station, laid the charges.
