Padarath congratulates police on massive ammunition haul

Princes Town MP Barry Padarath has congratulated the police for their seizure of 6,800 bullets and five high-powered firearms in Piparo on Saturday.

The following is a statement issued by Padarath's office today.

"Princes Town MP, Barry Padarath congratulated the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service for their hard work and diligence in the seizure of 6,800 rounds of ammunition in Piparo, Princes Town.

Padarath said that there has been a growing number of gun violence in the Princes Town Constituency over the past few months and this historic discovery of ammunition was both frightening and worrisome.

He said that constituents have been complaining of the migration of criminal elements into the constituency from other areas in Trinidad.

Padarath indicated that recently the top brass of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service met with him and other stakeholders in Princes Town to discuss the situation.

He commended the officers from the Criminal Intelligence Division and the Criminal Gang Intelligence Unit saying that more guns needed to be taken off the streets since most serious crimes were committed with firearms.

The MP said that Piparo was a rural part of the constituency that became known as the operational location of the likes of Dole Chadee and that we must not allow history to repeat itself.

He called on the Minister of National Security and the Police Service to deploy more manpower and services to known hotspots in the constituency.

Padarath also urged his constituents to cooperate with the Police in weeding out those who are engage in criminal activity. He recalled that in the days of Dole Chadee, constituents were afraid to provide information or speak out.

He added that they cannot continue to operate out of fear and that while he understood their concerns they cannot lose their conscience and their community all over again to crime.

The Princes Town MP said that Piparo was a part of his constituency that he has been placing a lot of focus on and highlighted that constituents in that area face several socioeconomic problems."
