State-owned Petrotrin has launched an investigation into the death of a worker at a well in Penal.
The company says it is seeking to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.
The following is Petrotrin's statement:
"Petrotrin, as a major contributor to the development of the energy sector in Trinidad and Tobago, appreciates the importance of maintaining a strong safety performance, minimising risks to employees, communities and the environment.
While we understand that operations in the industrial environment carry some inevitable risk, safety is a key strategic focus area which must not be compromised in our efforts to build a sustainable enterprise. To achieve this objective, we continue to focus on strengthening institutional procedures and practices as well as reinforcing safe behaviours in the work place.
The unfortunate passing of our long serving employee Mr. Charles Mitchell, further emphasises the importance of focusing on this area.
Petrotrin has launched investigations into the circumstances leading to his death as we seek to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident. We also continue to liaise with all other key stakeholders including the OSH Authority
Our condolences continue to be with the family of Mr. Mitchell."
