Police destroy 3000 marijuana trees valued at $3 million

Police have destroyed over 3000 marijuana trees valued at $3 million and has arrested 33 people for various offences.

The following is a statement by the Police Service on the issue.

"Northern Division – narcotics seized

Between the hours of 4:30am on Thursday 21st July 2016 and 1:30am on Friday 22nd July 2016, ASP Maraj, Inspector Nowbutt along with a party of officers attached to the Nothern Division Task Force, St. Joseph, Tunapuna, Arouca and Arima Criminal Investigations Department, Northern Division Special Reserve Police Officers, Pinto Police Post, Arouca and San Raphael Police stations conducted several anti-crime exercises in the Northern Division.

During the exercises 56 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued, 35 Field Interviews were conducted, 8 Voluntary Breathalyzer Tests were administered, 1 warrant was executed, 3000 fully grown marijuana trees with a street value of $3,000,000.00 were seized and destroyed and 20 persons were arrested for various offences which included possession of marijuana and shooting enquiries. No one was arrested in connection to the found marijuana trees. Investigations are continuing.

In another incident around 5:30am on Thursday 21st July 2016, PC Dookie along with a party of officers attached to the St. Joseph Criminal Investigations Department executed a search warrant at the residence of a man at Warf Trace, Maracas, St. Joseph where they conducted a search.

During the search the officers found and seized 9.1 kilograms marijuana with a street value of $136,500.00. The owner of the residence eluded the police officers, making good his escape. Investigations are continuing.

The exercises were coordinated by ACP Persad and spearheaded by Ag. Snr Supt Rajkumar and Ag. Snr Supt Moses.

Eastern Division – ammunition seized

Between the hours of 3:00am and 10:30pm on Thursday 21st July 2016, W/Sgt Lopez, Cpl Maharaj along with a party of officers attached to the

Mayaro and Valencia Criminal Investigations Department, Area South task Force, Court and Process Unit and Sangre Grande Traffic Section conducted several anti-crime exercises in the Mayaro, Sangre Grande and Valencia districts.

During the exercises 28 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued, 14 Field Interviews and 37 Field Sobriety Tests were conducted and 13 persons were arrested for various offences.

Of the persons arrested a 49-year-old man of Point Radix Road, Ortoire Village, Mayaro was charged for possession of 2 rounds 12 gauge ammunition."
