Police destroy marijuana trees, seedlings worth $5.5 million

Police attached to the Wester Division have destroyed thousands of marijuana trees and seedlings with a street value of $5.5 million.

This was one of several police operations that also netted guns and ammunition.
The following is a statement from the Police Service:

"Between the hours of 3:00am and 11:30pm on Thursday 14th July 2016, Sgt Arneaud, Sgt Maraj, Cpl Jupiter, along with a party of officers attached to the Crime Suppression Unit, Western Division Criminal Investigations Department and Task Force conducted several anti-crime exercises in the Western Division.

During the exercises 10 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued, 25 Field Interviews were conducted, 2 warrants were executed and 2 persons were arrested relative to sexual offences. The officers also found and destroyed 5000 fully grown marijuana trees and 2000 marijuana seedlings together with a street value of $5,500,000.00. No one was arrested. Investigations are continuing.

The exercises were coordinated by Ag. Supt Adams, Inspector Dan and Inspector Birbal.

Northern Division – ammunition and prohibited items seized

Between the hours of 5:00am on Thursday 14th July, 2016 and 12:30am on Friday 15th July, 2016, Sgt. Haywood, Sgt. Singh, along with a party of officers attached to the Northern Division, conducted several anti-crime exercises in the Arouca, Malabar, Maloney, Piarco, Tunapuna and San Raphael districts.

During the exercises 29 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued, 40 Field Interviews and 10 Field Sobriety Tests were conducted, 1 Warrant was executed, 1 round 5.56 ammunition, 4 rounds .38 ammunition, 5 rounds 12 gauge ammunition, 1 pistol ammunition, 1 camouflage jacket, 1 black mask, 1 tear gas hand grenade were found and seized and 8 persons were arrested for various offences.

The exercises were coordinated by ACP Persad and Spearheaded by Ag. Snr Supt Rajkumar and Ag. Snr Supt Moses.

Southern Division – anti-crime exercises

Between the hours of 8:00am on Wednesday 13th July, 2016 and 12:00 midnight on Thursday 14th July, 2016, Supt. Pragg, Sgt. Lewis, along with a party of officers attached to the Southern Division, conducted several anti-crime exercises in the Princes Town, Marabella and St. Margaret’s district.

During the exercises 5 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued, 72 Field Interviews were conducted, 17 warrants were executed and 12 persons were arrested for various offences.

South Western Division – anti-crime exercises

Between the hours of 2:00pm on Wednesday 13th July, 2016 and 4:00pm on Thursday 14th July, 2016, Ag. Sgt. Corrie, Ag. Sgt. Gosine, along with a party of officers attached to the Area West Criminal Investigations Department, Penal and Point Fortin Police Stations conducted several anti-crime exercises in the Penal and Point Fortin districts.

During the exercises 2 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued, 23 Field Interviews and 40 Field Sobriety Tests were conducted and 22 persons were arrested on outstanding warrants.

The exercises were coordinated by Snr. Supt. Hosein, Supt. James and Inspector Ramphal."
