Police maintain presence in East Port-of-Spain following fiery protests

The Police Service is assuring members of the public that they are maintaining a presence in East Port-of-Spain following a disturbance caused by residents.

This morning residents blocked streets and debris following some police shooting in the area.

Residents blocked Observatory, Oxford Piccadilly and Bath streets.

Video shows a garbage truck dumping garbage along observatory street before one resident attempts to set it ablaze.

The Port-of-Spain City Corporation has launched an investigation into why this happened.

Police have since cleared several of the main arteries.

Residents are protesting what they call an extra-judicial killing which occurred on Calvary Hill last evening.

It is understood that Akeil James, also known as 'Christmas', was shot and killed by police.

In addition to the burning of debris, shots were fired in the area.

It is unclear at this moment who fired the shots.
