Police have question 11 Chinese and Trinidad and Tobago nationals in ongoing investigations into the operations at Me Asia restaurant.
The police issued the following statement today.
"The Ministry of National Security wishes to further update the media on counter-trafficking operations at Me Asia Restaurant in Port of Spain.
Further to counter-trafficking operations on Monday 19 December 2016 at Me Asia Restaurant on Ariapita Avenue, the Ministry of National Security’s Counter Trafficking Unit (CTU) led another multi-agency exercise yesterday Tuesday 20 December 2016 that extended to Me Asia Dim Sum Restaurant located on Tragarete Road, Port of Spain.
The CTU was supported by Police Officers of the Port of Spain Police Division, the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) and Police Traffic Branch, Public Health Inspectors of the Port of Spain City Corporation, and Labour Inspectors from the Labour Inspectorate Division of the Ministry of Labour and Small Enterprise Development.
The multi-agency team revisited Me Asia Restaurant at Ariapita Avenue yesterday to discover that management had not heeded the advice given by the Public Health Inspectors to cease operations on Ariapita Avenue until it is in compliance with food safety and public health regulations.
As such, the Inspectors seized food from the compound and again strongly advised management to cease operations until it is in compliance with public health standards.
In total, eleven (11) workers - Chinese nationals and Trinidad and Tobago nationals - were interviewed and screened by the CTU.
Three (3) of the Chinese nationals were determined as illegal workers and several labour violations were found including non-payment of NIS and inaccurate payment of overtime wages.
One Me Asia company Director - Puy Kong Wong, was detained for selling alcohol at the location on Tragarete Road without a liquor license.
The media will be updated following any further developments in the investigations.
The public is reminded to call CTU toll-free hotline at 800-4288 (4CTU) if they know of or suspect any human trafficking activity."
