Police seek more cooperation in shooting probe

As investigations continue into the police-involved shooting of Keone Paryag—fiance of Danah Alleyne—who is the sister of Crime Watch host Ian Alleyne, police investigators claim that they are not getting the expected 100 per cent cooperation from those questioned about what transpired on Friday.

However, police said Alleyne (Danah) told them that she was not held hostage by Paryag.

Police said they strongly believe that something went terribly wrong that day that “pushed” Paryag to take out his licensed firearm and shoot about ten times while in Alleyne’s apartment at Biljah Road in Chaguanas.

Sources close to Paryag’s family claim that “a lot of things that were being said about Paryag were not true.”

Paryag was shot and wounded by police officers after he ventured outside and pointed the gun at Supt Wayne Mystar and threatened to shoot.

A video that went viral on Friday night showed Mystar apparently with his hands in the air begging Paryag to put down his gun.

After a few minutes, three shots were heard.

An autopsy conducted at the Forensic Science Centre in St James confirmed that Paryag was shot twice in the leg but died from internal and external haemorrhaging.

Speaking with the Guardian Media on Friday at the scene, Alleyne (Ian) said he, along with his brother-in-law, Mystar of the Central Division, were the first to arrive on the scene and were greeted by Paryag pointing a gun at them and threatening to shoot, eventually firing off a shot, forcing the police officers to return fire.

Since the shooting, both the Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith and the Police Complaints Authority headed by David West have launched separate investigations.

Griffith questioned Ian’s presence during the standoff that day and also, the fact that Ian had a licensed firearm drawn and at his side.
