Police have seized several guns as well as ammunition in several operations over the last few days.
A statement by the Police Service outlines its recent actions.
"Western Division – firearm, ammunition seized
Around 8:00pm on Wednesday 3rd August 2016, Inspector Hospedales along with a party of officers attached to the Western Division Criminal Investigations Department and Task Force executed a search warrant at a residence at Chaconia Cresent, Four Roads, Diego Martin where they conducted a search.
During the search the officers found and seized 1 Taurus 9mm pistol, 1 magazine and 13 rounds 9mm ammunition. Three men ages 19, 21 and 28 were arrested for the offence. PC Benjamin is continuing enquiries.
Port of Spain Division – firearm, ammunition seized
Around 9.20pm on Wednesday 3rd August 2016, Sgt Williams along with a party of officers attached to the Inter-Agency Task Force Operation H.O.P.E and Strike Team executed a search warrant at the residence of a man at William Street, Laventille. Nothing mentioned on the warrant was found however, the man was arrested relative to robberies and firearm related offences.
Whilst in the execution of their duties the officers observed a man who upon seeing the officers ran away. Several of the officers gave chase and the man was apprehended by PC Caruth who conducted a search.
During the search the officer found and seized 1 pistol with 16 rounds 9mm ammunition. The 15-year-old man of Beetham Gardens, Laventille was detained and conveyed to the Besson Street Police Station. PC Caruth is continuing investigations.
Northern Division – anti-crime exercises
Between the hours of 12midday on Thursday 4th August 2016 and 3:00am on Friday 5th August 2016, Sgt Haywood, Cpl Bedasie along with a party of officers attached to the Northern Division Task Force Area East and Central, Arima Criminal Investigations Department, San Raphael and Tunapuna Police Stations conducted several anti-crime exercises in the Northern Division.
During the exercises 2 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued, 116 Field Interviews and 37 Field Sobriety Tests were conducted and 13 persons were arrested for various offences which included possession of marijuana, driving under the influence and gang related activities.
Central Division – firearm, ammunition seized
Between the hours of 2:00pm and 8:00pm on Thursday 4th August 2016, Ag. Snr Supt Hodge-Griffith, Supt Corbette, ASP Sooker, Inspector Douglas along with a party of officers attached to the Central Division Task Force, Central Operation Unit, Police Canine Branch and Criminal Gang Intelligence Unit acted upon information received and proceeded to Tobago Road Extension where they observed seven men surrounding a table. The officers approached the men and found and seized 1 Glock 9mm pistol, 1 magazine and 17 rounds 9mm ammunition. The men who ranged between the ages of 20 and 25 were all arrested and charged for possession of firearm and possession of ammunition.
The officers also found and seized 1 Smith and Wesson revolver, 4 rounds .38 ammunition, 2 AK magazines, 58 rounds 5.56 ammunition and 6 rounds 7.62 ammunition. No one was arrested. Investigations are continuing.
In a separate incident within the division 6 persons were arrested for various offences which included being and illegal immigrant and outstanding warrant.
Tobago Division – anti-crime exercise
Between the hours of 10:00am and 12mindnight on Thursday 4th August 2016, Sgt Roberts along with a party of officers attached to the Crown Point Police Station with the assistance of personal from Immigration Department conducted an anti-crime exercise in the Crown Point district.
During the exercise 7 persons were arrested. Of the persons arrested 6 foreign nationals were charged for over staying their time.
The exercise was coordinated by Supt Nelson."
