Scarborough & Goodwood Secondary Schools closed tomorrow

The Division of Education, Innovation and Energy (DEIE) says the Scarborough Secondary School and Goodwood Secondary School will be closed tomorrow (October 23).

Jacqueline Job, Administrator, DEIE, said that while the Division would have preferred to avoid closing the schools, this action is necessary at this time.

Job confirmed that at Scarborough Secondary School there was an electrical issue on one block of the school, which caused a fire to one light fixture on Sunday night (October 21).

T&TEC, the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services and electrical technicians from the Division of Infrastructure, Quarries and the Environment (DIQE) were informed and visited the school to conduct initial inspections and an assessment.

The DEIE has also arranged for an electrician from DIQE to carry out a further inspection of the school plant.

With regard to Goodwood Secondary School, it has become necessary for the disposal of unused chemicals in the school’s science lab as well as sanitization of an administrative block, which experienced leakage due to a broken water line in the science lab.

The DEIE has also confirmed that officials from CARIRI have been engaged to conduct testing in the labs at Goodwood Secondary School.

The Division of Education, Innovation and Energy is seeking to reassure the public, especially the teachers, parents and students of Scarborough Secondary School and Goodwood Secondary School that the safety of all the island’s students is of paramount importance to the Division.
