Several people shot at Houston strip mall

Several people were shot in a shopping center in southwest Houston Monday morning, police said.

The suspected gunman has been shot by officers, police said in a tweet. It's not clear if the person is alive.

Dozens of police vehicles and ambulances could be seen responding to the "active shooter situation" at the strip mall.

Houston Fire Department spokesman Jay Evans said more than 15 EMS crews were dispatched about 6:30 a.m. to reports of shooting at a Petco store.

Residents were asked to avoid the area, but police said they do no think any other people were responsible for the shooting.

Authorities said "several people" shot by the shooter were transported to hospitals.

The number of people wounded and the severity of their injuries has not yet been released.
