Police have detained a member of the T&T Defence Force (TTDF) in connection with last Saturday’s hit-and-run accident which claimed the life of cyclist Aaron Thomas in Cumuto.

Thomas, of Victory Heights, Arima, died after being struck while riding ahead of his Madonna Wheelers teammates west along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway near the Cumuto intersection.

Police reports state that around 8 am the driver of a Nissan Navara broke the traffic lights at top speed and hit Thomas, who was thrown more than 100 feet away from where he was. Thomas died on the scene.

However, the driver of the vehicle subsequently abandoned it and fled the scene.

Police said the soldier reported that his white Nissan Navara was stolen. However, investigating officers eventually realised that the soldier was, in fact, the person who fled the scene of the accident.

Thomas was the eighth cyclist to be killed this year while riding along the nation's highways.

More on this story as information comes to hand.
