Stand-off on St Vincent Street as driver refuses to let wrecker leave

A moment of chaos in downtown Port-of-Spain as a driver whose vehicle was being wrecked, stood in front of the wrecker, refusing to let it leave with his van because the tyre had burst during while the vehicle was being lifted.

Traffic piled up all along St Vincent Street as Trevor Weeks stood in the roadway in defiance, refusing to allow the driver and accompanying police officer to take the grey van from the front of Guardian Media Limited.

As a crowd of onlookers gathered, Weeks argued that while he had no problem paying the wrecking fee, he wanted compensation for his tyre in return.

He said he recently purchased new tires and found it unfair that he could not accompany his vehicle to the impound lot, in the wrecker.

After more than 15 minutes, a senior officer pulled up in an unmarked vehicle and spoke to Weeks.

The officer agreed to take Weeks to the parking lot in the unmarked police vehicle, thereby ending the stand-off  just as no fewer than four police cars pulled up from both directions.
