Three arrested following high-speed chase and shootout with police

A high-speed chase and an exchange of gunfire involving police in Point Fortin over the weekend, ended with the arrest of three men and seizure of a pistol and a quantity of ammunition, police said in a statement issued Tuesday.

It says that Cpl Naresh Bajan, PC Arnold Maharaj and PC Adel Clarke of the Point Fortin Police Station were on mobile patrol in the Point Fortin district around 2:30pm, on Saturday 30th December, 2017, when they observed a silver Nissan B14 motor vehicle with four male occupants, proceeding along the Guapo-Cap-de-Ville Main Road in an easterly direction at high speed.

Police say the officers pursued the vehicle, during which one of the occupants seated in the front passenger seat, pointed an object resembling a firearm in their direction and several loud explosions were heard.

There was a return of fire, resulting in the vehicle veering off the roadway and crashing.

The gunman alighted the vehicle and ran off.

Police say the officers gave chase and shots were fired but the gunman eluded capture by escaping into nearby bushes.

A search of the vehicle was conducted and one pistol along with a magazine containing five rounds of ammunition were discovered.

Three suspects; a 27- year-old, taxi driver, of Techier Village, Point Fortin, a 22-year-old man and a 25-year-old man, both fabricators, of Diego Martin, were arrested in connection with the incident.

A search is currently underway for the fourth suspect.
