A truck driver has been ordered to pay a $12,000 fine forthwith after he admitted to having 671 grammes of marijuana in his possession.
Shivanand Samaroo, 28, of Bayshore, Marabella, will be jailed for 24 months if he fails to pay the money immediately.
Samaroo pleaded guilty when he appeared before San Fernando Senior Magistrate Alicia Chankar in the First Court.
He was convicted for a similar offence two years ago.
Court prosecutor Insp Parasan Ramsumair said on January 19, Samaroo was leaning against a car which was parked at Bayshore, Marabella.
When he saw the police approaching, Samaroo ran away and escaped.
Upon searching the car, the police found a black plastic bag with marijuana under the left front seat. Samaroo was arrested by the police yesterday morning and brought before the court.
Defence attorney Annalee Girwar asked the magistrate to be lenient with Samaroo who also works as a mechanic and has two children.
She said he has a smoking problem and had the drugs for his personal use.
The attorney said he opted to buy it in bulk rather than making several trips to buy small amounts.
