Two men shot dead by police after robbing Cunupia family

Police have shot and killed two men who they say were part of a group responsible for robbing and assaulting a Cunupia family.

Police say around 4.25 pm yesterday,  four men, two of whom were armed with firearms, entered the First Rounds Liquor Mart and announced a hold-up. The men robbed 30-year-old Imran Ali, his 29-year-old wife Savitri and 54-year-old Samdaye Ali. 

Police say Imran Ali was dealt several blows about his body. 

A report was made to the police and in an operation led by Senior Superintendent Ford, police surrounded the establishment and called on the men to surrender. 

Police say they refused and started shooting at the officers. 

During the exchange of gunfire two of the robbers were shot and satyed down. Another one was shot and escaped while the fourth was captured a short distance away. 

The two badly-wounded men were taken to the Chaguanas Accident and Emergency Department where they succumbed to their injuries while being treated.

All the stolen items were recovered and subsequently identified by the victims who also identified the deceased as the men who robbed them.

A Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol and and an empty magazine were recovered.
