The Opposition United National Congress is getting ready for this year's Local Government elections in December.
The party says over 400 people have come forward to offer themselves as candidates.
The following is a statement from the UNC:
"More than four hundred people have filed nominations to represent the United National Congress (UNC) in the Local Government Elections scheduled to be held this year. Nominations closed at 4:00 pm Sunday May 15, 2016.
In preparation for the elections, the Honorable Kamla Persad-Bissessar SC, Leader of the UNC, announced in April the opening of nominations for persons seeking to represent the Party at the Local Government level.
Since then there has been a steady stream of applications from UNC Members throughout Trinidad desirous of contesting these Elections.
The UNC is pleased with this heightened interest in the party, which has resulted in the large number of prospective candidates.
The party will immediately begin its rigorous in-house evaluation procedures with a view to commencing the screening of candidates shortly.
The Party wishes to thank all those persons who have expressed an interest in serving their country at the Local Government level."
