A Freeport taxi-driver is now in police custody, hours after being accused of raping a 32-year-old woman, who was a passenger in his vehicle.
The woman escaped possible further harm by freeing herself from the trunk of the vehicle.
The woman, of Enterprise, boarded an H-taxi, a green Nissan B14, occupied by the driver and one other passenger at St. Mary’s Junction, to go to her place of work at Arena Road, Freeport, around 8:10 am, on Thursday.
After dropping off the other passenger, the taxi driver allegedly took the woman to a bushy area in the vicinity of the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway, where he proceeded to rape her.
The accused then drove to another bushy area in Preysal, where he allegedly assaulted the victim again.
The driver then tied the woman up, bound her mouth and placed her in the trunk of his vehicle.
The woman managed to untie herself and jump out of the trunk around 11 am, before seeking assistance.
She was taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility, where she was medically examined.
The taxi driver was subsequently arrested in connection with the incident at around 11:30 pm, in the Freeport district.
Police are advising women and children to be vigilant and cautious about the persons to with whom they travel - both legitimate operators of taxis and PH drivers.
