Works Minister v HRM in court again today

Tuesday, February 18, 2020 - 12:30

Officials of the Works and Transport Ministry and members of the Highway Reroute Movement (HRM) returned to the San Fernando Supreme Court, today, to make their legal submissions before the judge.

Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan was cross examined yesterday by HRM leader Dr Wayne Kublalsingh, who is representing himself in a judicial review claim he brought against the minister.

Dr Kublalsingh is claiming that Minister Sinanan reneged on a promise he made to the group, to not undertake any work on the Debe to Mon Desir segment of the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway Extension Project, unless consultation takes place.

However, during his cross-examination by Dr Kublalsingh before Justice Ricky Rahim, the minister claimed that he had informed the HRM no new work will be undertaken.

Addressing the media outside the court yesterday, Minister Sinanan said he now patiently awaits the judge’s decision.

“I am happy that this is one hurdle off,” he said, “and we’re just waiting on the judgement now. The judge will make the final determination, based on the evidence.”

The HRM leader was also cross examined by attorneys of the Ministry.

Dr Kublalsingh is still making an appeal to the Works and Transport Minister and the Prime Minister to meet with the HRM to bring about a final resolution.

“Both sides are not very far apart, and if we meet in good faith, we could come together and solve this thing, together,” he maintains.

A ruling on the matter is expected to be given on Friday 24th April 2020.
