Retrenched Petrotrin workers may be facing a bleak Christmas this year having lost their jobs but the company officials say all outstanding arrears for back pay will be paid by January 15.
The Ministry of Health says funds have been released by the Ministry of Finance for the payment of the remaining 50 percent arrears of salary to all eligible employees of the Regional Health Authorities who were previously paid the first 50 percent of the arrears.
The announcement came via a media statement Monday evening.
The Ministry said cheques are being processed and it is anticipated that payment will be effected by the respective Regional Health Authorities between Thursday 6th April and Friday 7th April, 2017.
Finance Minister Colm Imbert has told the Parliament that the main account the Government uses to pay bills, is $30 billion in deficit.
Minister Imbert says that as a result, it cannot access money to pay arrears owed to public servants and members of the protective services.
He says the Government has found that as the General Election drew near, there was a "mad rush" to settle payments to contractors even though the Government "knew that the money was not available".
