Investigations are continuing into the motive behind yesterday’s killing of Jmari Villaruel, in Troumacaque in Laventille.
The incident reportedly occurred at 5:30 p.m. Reports are that the victim was ambushed as he was liming at Hitler Trace, and was shot multiple times.
Police said that Jmari Villaruel, also known as "Pokey", hailed from Beetham Gardens and was well known by law enforcement.
No arrest has been made and investigations are continuing.
An autopsy is expected to be performed on Jmari Villaruel today, at the Forensic Science Centre in St James.
A 25-year-old man from Beetham Gardens has been detained and a pistol and a quantity of marijuana seized by police following an anti-crime exercise.
WPC Malaika Ramgoolie and officers attached to the Port of Spain Division Task Force conducted the exercise on August 7th in the Sea Lots area.
According to police reports, during the exercise, officers proceeded to Pioneer Drive, where they had cause to stop and search a 25-year-old man of Beetham Gardens.
A Glock pistol fitted with a magazine containing 11 rounds of 9mm ammunition was discovered in his possession.
Police are describing the situation at the Beetham as tense as residents are expressing outrage following the shooting of 19-year-old Akiel Thomas by police.
Police are maintaining that the teen was armed.
To discourage lawless forms of protests the police say they will keep a heavy presence of officers along the highway and bus route near the area.

The residents blocked the road this morning causing traffic.
